Elekta VMAT 510(k) Clearance Welcomed by US Radiation Oncologists

Elekta has received FDA 510(k) clearances for its groundbreaking Elekta VMAT solution, allowing US cancer specialists to both plan and deliver radiation using a technique which has the potential to revolutionize the practice of radiation oncology. NIH-funded study harnesses Elekta technologies to offer hope for lung tumor patients

Lung tumors have been difficult to treat with radiation therapy because patient breathing causes tumors to move around. This uncertainty about the tumor’s exact position has made it challenging to target the tumor with radiation beams while simultaneously avoiding normal tissues with these same treatment beams.

Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre (TSRCC), the Cancer Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, is purchasing innovative Elekta cancer treatment systems that will offer significantly greater treatment accuracy for radiotherapy. TSRCC, one of North America’s largest cancer care centers, has purchased two Elekta Synergy® systems and will be one of the first centers in North America to install MOSAIQ™ Oncology PACS from IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc., an Elekta company.

First Patient Treated with new Leksell Gamma Knife® PERFEXION™

Leksell Gamma Knife® PERFEXION™, Elekta’s new system for stereotactic radiosurgery, has for the first time been used clinically to treat patients at Hôpital de la Timone (University Hospital La Timone) in Marseille, France.

By introducing Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™, Elekta expands the Gamma Knife® product line with a completely new system that takes stereotactic radiosurgery to the next level and provides a radiosurgical platform for further refinement and expansion of procedures in the brain, cervical spine and head & neck regions.

On May 21-25, the 13th International Leksell Gamma Knife® Society Meeting will be in session in Seoul, Korea, giving Leksell Gamma Knife® users, leading neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists from around the world, an update on recent developments within Gamma Knife® surgery.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), one of the leading radiosurgery centers in the U.S, announced today their on-going relationship with Elekta that will extend UPMC’s leadership in the fast-growing field of extracranial radiosurgery utilizing the Elekta Axesse™ system.
