Elekta VMAT Benefits

As a result of Elekta’s advances in treatment technology VMAT offers major benefits not seen with today’s common treatment techniques:

Faster treatment times

With Elekta VMAT’s modulated arc therapy delivery technology and progressive inverse planning algorithms treatment delivery can be performed in as fast as two minutes. This is a substantial benefit in time savings to the patient and staff when compared with today’s typical IMRT treatments. When combined with the automated patient positioning of Elekta’s VolumeView™ 3D cone beam imaging the result is fastest, most accurate radiation therapy available.

Patient Perspective

From the patient's perspective, Elekta VMAT combines a significant reduction in treatment time with optimal avoidance of radiation dose to healthy tissues surrounding the tumor. The patient is more comfortable and does not have to hold still for as long as many other treatments.

Clinician Perspective

From the doctor's perspective, the reduction in treatment time makes it much easier to accurately target the tumor. The complexity of the treatment is greatly reduced by removing the requirement for gated therapy.  Additionally, the improved dose sparing offers new options to either increase dose to tumor or reduce side effects and therefore potentially improve outcomes.

Target Dose Conformality

Elekta benefits from it’s expertise in stereotactic dose planning and delivery to provide the required components to deliver helical like dose conformality. Targets that are close to critical structures or regions of interest are confidently treated without large margins or complicated treatment setups.

Reduced radiation dose to healthy tissue

Due to the ability to control the gantry position, gantry speed, MLC leaves, dose rate and/or collimator angle along with the superior treatment planning algorithms the clinician has the tools to deliver the dose exactly where prescribed avoiding healthy tissue. Coupled with Elekta’s clinically proven ultra-low 3D imaging dose, the speed of VMAT treatments can reduce the whole body dose of patients receiving treatment.

3D Volumetric Imaging

In just minutes Elekta’s clinically proven 3 D imaging solution, X-Ray Volume Imager (XVI), provides the tools used to determine submillimeter positional confidence. With XVI you can obtain a low dose kv image, analyze and correct patient position all from the treatment control console while automatically saving all treatment information in MOSAIQ- the IMPAC electronic medical record.
