Elekta Demonstrates Diverse Range of Cancer Management Solutions at Two of the Largest Medical Equipment Exhibitions in Asia

Beijing, China, May 04, 2010

New tools to make radiation delivery more precise and easier to deliver met with enthusiasm

In April, Elekta demonstrated new tools for clinical precision and workflow efficiency at two of the largest medical equipment exhibitions in Asia—the 22nd International Medical Instruments & Equipment Exhibition (ChinaMed) in Beijing and the 63rd China International Medicinal Equipment Fair (CMEF) in Shenzhen. Highlights included Elekta’s new image guided solutions for treating lung tumors, Symmetry™ and Intuity™ , as well as the introduction of MOSAIQ® for information management in the Chinese language.

“Symmetry and Intuity completely change the approach when it comes to the treatment of lung tumors,” says Dee Mathieson, Senior Vice President, Oncology Business Line Management. “Symmetry provides tools to manage shifts in the relative positions of the tumor and organs-at-risk during the respiratory cycle, and Intuity ensures that not only is the tumor’s position accounted for, but also the position of nearby healthy critical structures. This contributes to a more patient-friendly and safe treatment.”

During each exhibition, Elekta introduced MOSAIQ, which now supports the Chinese language. Elekta’s robust oncology information and image-enabled EMR system, MOSAIQ streamlines the entire therapy workflow from the first diagnosis and staging, through planning, treatment, follow-up and long-term survivorship.

A rapidly growing market

In China, spending on healthcare is increasing. Coupled with general economic growth and demographic trends, this effort is expected to lead to increased opportunities for more people to receive treatment.

“The need for cancer management solutions is very large not only in China, but throughout Asia, both for highly advanced solutions such as IGRT and more affordable solutions aimed at a broader market,” says Ian Alexander, Executive Vice President of Elekta’s Asia Pacific Region.

In January 2009, Elekta received approval from the Chinese Food and Drug Administration to sell Elekta Compact™. In addition, increasing numbers of Chinese medical centers are adopting Elekta technology. For instance, China’s Heilongjiang Province Cancer Hospital recently became one of the first hospitals to use Elekta VMAT planned with Monaco® software to treat a patient with a lung tumor.

Other exhibition highlights:

  • Elekta Compact, a cost-effective, versatile linear accelerator that provides a wide range of treatment techniques. With its modular design, Elekta Compact is a treatment system on a platform designed to accept new features and functions as department needs grow.
  • Extend™, a new stereotactic treatment program that lets clinicians apply the power and precision of Gamma Knife surgery to a broader class of targets in the head and neck. Extend for Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ includes a re-locatable frame and support for fractionated treatments, which provides cross-functional advantages in SRS and SRT for neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists.
  • Flexible radiation treatment planning tools, including Monaco, XiO® and Atlas-based Autosegmentation that enhance workflow and help make the planning process easier, more straightforward and clinically reliable.

Two of the largest medical exhibitions in Asia, nearly 60,000 people visited CMEF, including 4,000 International visitors from over 100 countries. Pre-show attendance for ChinaMed 2010 was estimated at more than 20,000 attendees.
