Munich, Germany, August 10, 2009

The University Hospital Munich, Ludwig Maximilians-University (LMU) has delivered clinical treatments to cancer patients utilizing Monaco®, an advanced Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) planning solution from Elekta CMS Software.

Monaco originated from a collaboration between Elekta CMS Software and the University of Tuebingen to commercialize the Hyperion project, which serves as the foundation for the system. Now in clinical use for the first time in Germany, Monaco offers a new, more advanced way to master the art of IMRT planning for oncology clinics/centers/departments.

Prof. Dr. Claus Belka serves as head of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Munich and professor at LMU. Prof. Belka and his team have treated more than 700 patients with the system, and since been able to established the efficiency and accuracy of the planning solution in numerous publications.

“Having broad clinical experience with Hyperion, I can clearly say Monaco is a perfect translation into a commercial product,“ says Prof. Dr. Belka.

“Elekta is proud to partner with LMU, and excited to offer this innovative, highly-experienced clinic with the tools to provide a higher standard of patient care,” says Matthias Franz, Managing Director Europe, Middle East & Africa, Elekta CMS Software.

Monaco features innovative biological functions with multi-criterial constrained optimization, a powerful leaf-sequence optimizer and a robust Monte Carlo dose calculation algorithm. These features help to make planning easier, reproducible and clinically reliable.
