Elekta Delivers 3D Brain Mapping Technology to Southeast Asia

Kelantan, Malaysia , July 13, 2009

Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) has installed Elekta Neuromag®, a powerful tool that measures and records human brain activity using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) technology.

Completely non-invasive and painless, the device enables clinicians to view the brain “in action” – offering a better understanding of normal brain function, as well as brain disorders such as epilepsy.

A research hub for basic and clinical neuroscience, the Department of Neurosciences  at the HUSM was founded in August of 1999 as a unit. Since, the department has launched a research and teaching laboratory, as well as acquired state-of-the-art equipment such as Elekta Neuromag®. Prof. Dr. Jafri Malin Abdullah, a Universiti Sains Malaysia medical school alumnus, helped to establish the Unit, and now serves as a Full Professor of Neurosciences as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Science in Malaysia and head of the Unit.

“We are extremely excited about the installation of Elekta Neuromag®, and believe the system will help HUSM to become a center of excellence for clinical neuroscience in the Asia-Pacific region,” says Prof. Jafri.

A large group of researchers, including physicists, mathematicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons and psychologists will utilize the system to investigate neurological and cognitive ailments, including epileptic foci and behavior abnormalities.

“During weekends and after office hours, we also plan to use the system for clinical, fundamental and applied research in the field of neuromathematics, neurophysics, neurobehavior and cognitive research in addiction, neuroeconomics and decision making,” adds Prof. Jafri.
